Working on two recipes for older sensors (X1OOF, XH1, XT20, XT2, XT3)
I get a lot of requests for the FUJICA Half recipe and Urban Vibe. And I get a lot of questions about whether they are suitable for older cameras. I am now developing 2 recipes especially for older sensors. Here some examples of the Faux URBAN.

FUJICA Half project - PART 4: printing and presentation
A quest to digitally recreate the photos of my beloved analogue FUJICA Half camera from the 1970s.
(Article below pictures.)
I do have experience with making because my profession as an artist and art & science teacher (Maker Education). In my class, the students use existing material as much as possible. I also used corrugated cardboard from packaging boxes for this folder. It closes with a so-called Japanese closure: by twisting the string around the metal shaft, it is automatically fixed.
About printing: I outsource my printing work to Profotonet Rotterdam. The colours they print (on real photo paper) match what I see on my Apple iPad and iMac. They do not correct anything, so it is important not to set the brightness of your screen too bright. You can use a test print to see how clear your screen should be for printing. That works very well.
The whole series is now finished. See [FUJICA HALF].
This is the last blog about the FUJICA Half Project. It was fun.

FUJICA Half project - PART 3: subject, half frame, happy accidents
A quest to digitally recreate the photos of my beloved analogue FUJICA Half camera from the 1970s.
(Article below pictures.)
An analog film camera, and even better a half frame analog 35 mm camera, is ideally suited to capture everyday things. Just the things you encounter when you walk to work, or on the street in your own neighbourhood. Searching and finding those mundane objects and situations forces you to look without judgement.
Am I looking at the dirty gray ground of the ferry on my way to work, or is it a play of shapes, light and shadow? Is it the football field with artificial grass (which always annoys me, because it's not real grass), or is it an abstract line game of colour and shadow and do you unexpectedly find complementary colours in objects that have been forgotten?
If you use analog film (and especially half frame), all shots are fixed chronologically next to each other on a film strip. The half frame was certainly visible if you had regular prints made from it; there are two images on one printout. Sometimes from a series, sometimes absolutely dissonant with each other because there were images of two different situations that have nothing to do with each other. And sometimes also 'failed' photos next to a good photo.
These are the 'happy mistakes' that I also try to bring back when I select the photos. Quite tricky, because it's about coincidences that you try to recreate in a DIPTYCH.
The whole series is now finished. See [FUJICA HALF]. Only the photos still have to be printed.
The next blog is about printing and presenting.

FUJICA Half project - PART 2: analog aesthetics
A quest to digitally recreate the photos of my beloved analogue FUJICA Half camera from the 1970s.
(Article below pictures.)
Are analog cameras a nod to the past? Are pictures a nostalgic memory captured on paper? Do we take them to remember or do we remember because we take pictures?
However you look at it, the aesthetics of photos from about 50 years ago are different from the aesthetics of today. Digital cameras are great tools: accurate meters, sharp, an automatic white balance and no grain.
Yet there is that penchant for the analog: the grain, the blur, the 'wrong' white balance. And why not? These are not easy tricks, but think of it as an achievement, think of it as extra image elements on your palette. Grain is, in fact, just as important a medium of expression as colour or form. Once a technical limitation, but now a choice. Grain, less sharpness and a fixed white balance are essential parts of my recipe FUJICA Half, of which you see some examples above. Printed on photo paper it gives a nice soft look.
Have a look at this interesting video: 'Mandy: The Art Of Film Grain'
And to complete the analog style: for this series I use lenses with a vintage design (TTArtisan, 7Artisan). These have a softer drawing, vignetting and they are manual. Or you can use real vintage lenses. See also this well written article by Luís Costa: https://lifeunintended.com/articles/vintage-lenses-perfect-imperfection/

NEW RECIPE: Re-Analog
I get a lot of requests for the FUJICA Half recipe. And rightly so; it is a special recipe with an analogue feeling. But there is another one: Re-Analog. It’s hosted on Justin Gould’s film recipe site, but you can also email me.

'New Work' have changed to 'Blog/New'.
In this blog I will also present news about current projects. Not just pictures, but also a bit of text about the process, my thoughts, frustrations and everything that comes with 'making'. The first one is about the FUJICA Half project:
FUJICA Half project
PART 1: How analog and digital go together.
Sometimes, very occasionally I still take analogue photos with my Fujica Half: a half format based on regular 35 mm film. The surprising thing about that is, if you have them printed as a normal photo, you get two images side by side. Often from the same 'shoot', but also 'failed' photos (whatever that may be) or photos from another shoot from another day combined.
I want to investigate whether this is also possible with digital means. Whether it can achieve an aesthetic (the double frames, the flat fuji recipe FUJICA half and the grain) that I know from the analog. My first blogs will be about this project.
